#FREE!!! Suited to be a Cowboy

Published December 22, 2015 by Lorraine Nelson - Author

Today is the final day of Suited to be a Cowboy being free. I thought I had already posted this, but in the rush of preparing for Christmas, I guess it slipped my mind. But it’s not too late to grab your copy.

I love this cover! It was done by Dawne Dominique and I think she did a fantastic job. 🙂

The horse riding area with three horses on the background on a bright sunny day

City slicker accountant meets ranching diva. Can their combined skills save the ranch or will their mutual attraction prove detrimental to their working relationship?

Jimmy was pumped. Adrenaline poured through his veins as wild as the Mustangs while he’d chased after the horses. Now the rush had left, he was dog-tired and looking forward to sharing his news with his boss. But not smelling as he did coming off the range.
“Sherry, you are one beautiful horse. You knew what to do better than I did. Or was it that handsome stallion that had you moving so fast?” He frowned as he gave his horse a good rubdown, remembering the incident with Midnight Rain. How could he and Melissa get back to a normal working relationship? Would she even care about his success tonight? Animosity rent the air whenever they were near each other.
He’d bite the bullet and take the first step by sharing his news. After all, he hadn’t asked to bring Sherry with him and it had been rude to assume it would be all right.
After returning to his room, he headed straight for the shower. He’d clean up and change clothes before going to find Melissa. He and Tippy had corralled eighteen Mustangs tonight. He’d hoped for one or two, as on previous occasions, but they’d been lucky.
He showered in record time and went into the bedroom to find clean clothes, a towel wrapped around his waist. That’s when he noticed the lights on in Melissa’s room. She’d gone to bed. Maybe she just wasn’t interested.
Would she mind if I cross the courtyard and knock on her door? He stood close to the glass pane, trying to catch a glimpse of movement that would indicate she was still up. Nothing moved. The lights blinked off as he stood there, undecided. Well, that settles that. Letting the towel drop, he turned toward the bed. He’d tell her tomorrow, if she asked.
Exhausted beyond belief, he fell asleep almost instantly.

* * * *

Oh, wow! Melissa felt like a voyeur. A wanton and extremely needy voyeur.
When he came out of the bathroom wearing only a towel, she should’ve turned away, but she couldn’t. Her feet seemed glued to the floor.
From the way he filled out his clothes, she’d known he had a great physique. What she hadn’t known, and couldn’t possibly guess, was how splendid a body he did have.
His broad shoulders tapered to a narrow waist, not a spare ounce of flesh on him to be seen. Perfect abs, muscled biceps, and those legs, long and lean. Her legs shook in reaction, threatening to give way. She was about to start drooling. Never had she seen such a perfect body.
Certainly not Marcus’s. She giggled, remembering his paunch. Too much wining and dining did that to a person. Served him right, the adulterous jerk.
She watched as Jimmy crossed his room, walking up close to the patio doors. Was he coming to see her? Dressed like that? Had she given him reason to think he could? Melissa’s insides tightened in response as she turned off the lamp. She almost parted the blinds and waved when he looked her way…until he dropped the towel.
She’d moved then, peeking through the blinds to try and determine if Jimmy was retiring for the night, or just winding down.
Her eyes threatened to pop out of her head and she knew her mouth was hanging open, but she couldn’t look away. She took one step backward, then another, never taking her eyes off his muscular physique. When he turned and headed for bed, she almost cried out for him, such was her need. Instead, she stood there and admired his fine tush until he covered it with the blankets and turned out the lamp.
“Good night, Jimmy,” she whispered into the darkness. “Sweet dreams.” She undressed and crawled in between the sheets, punched her pillow into submission and settled in to get some shut-eye. Sleep did come, eventually, and with it exquisite dreams of the man across the way.

I’m doing it again! Blessed Homecoming_200x300

I received such great feedback on the free downloads of Finding Baby J, that I thought I’d do it again. 🙂 Blessed Homecoming is free from today, October 21st, until the 25th. Feel free to download your copy.

Blessed Homecoming is the first, and so far only, inspirational novel that I have written. Although a lot of my self-published works are clean reads, this is the only book that speaks of faith in God and in one’s self. I truly enjoyed crafting this story of romantic suspense. Previously published with BP, it became a bestseller with several e-retailers and was Book of the Month at a major review site.

Don’t you just love the cover! The couple pictured here are exactly as I imagined them to be.

The hometown girl and the handyman both carry emotional baggage. Are they destined to remain friends or is there room in their hearts for more?
Wendy Danforth is preparing to be a single mom, her ex-husband in jail for spousal abuse. She returns to her hometown, to renew her faith and to heal. Caught off guard by the handyman in residence, attraction hits, swift and piercing, but she quells her unruly emotions, in no hurry to get involved in another relationship. Besides, at almost nine months pregnant, she wasn’t exactly looking her best.

Jake Roberts, hired to renovate the Danforths’ house, took one look at his employer’s daughter and wanted to run far and fast. He hadn’t possessed an ounce of faith or been around a pregnant woman in three long years, not since his wife and unborn son died in an auto accident. They become friends, and when her ex-husband escapes custody, he steps up to protect Wendy and her unborn child. Will the danger and close proximity test their friendship? Or will it lead to more? Can Jake regain his lost faith, or will it elude him forever?

Here a taste of what readers are saying about Blessed Homecoming:

5 stars Warmly real characters and a heart-warming plot from one of today’s finest romance authors March 31, 2014 By Michelle Fayard
There are many fine writers in the romance field today, but Lorraine Nelson, with her gift for understanding and portraying people and their ability to not give up on love, leads the pack.

5 Stars Blessed by Blessed Homecoming

Realistic and inspiring characters. Wendy and Jake have pasts that make it difficult for them to trust and love. So glad to have run across this story, and will be reading more by Lorraine Nelson.

5 stars The TBR Pile  – A Must Read. 04/20/2013 Amanda
Wendy and Jake are realistic, likable characters with real problems. The instant attraction was not insta-love, which I appreciated in this story. Rather than “love cures all”, this story seemed a lot more like love encouraged each one to grow and heal.

5 stars Tara Chevrestt, July 13th, 2012
A sweet, clean read that explores love, trust, forgiveness, and the close bonds of family.

5 Stars Stacey Jo Siferd’s

MANHATTAN MILLIONAIRE’S CINDERELLA – a short contemporary romance by Sun Chara.

Book Trailer

Will their wedding night be a one-night stand or a merger for keeps?
Global real estate mogul, Cade Sloan should’ve listened to his own advice: trust no one, and never a woman…especially not his 24 hour bride gone AWOL with his millions. Nina, mousy secretary turned sexy vixen, will repay every penny with interest…
When Cade gears up for a takeover, there’s sweet hell to pay. Nina owes her husband a wedding night and he’s hell bent on collecting… his way, his time, his pleasure.

Cade Sloan—Manhattan’s hotshot bachelor on the brink of bankruptcy.
Cade read the headline and hurled the newspaper into the trashcan, the
taunting words searing his brain. Prowling to and fro his high-rise office, he paused in stride and zoned in on his secretary, sitting ramrod straight, her fingers flying across the computer keyboard.

“Ms. McLow—” The words dissolved on his tongue, and he scratched his head. What was her name anyway?

“Ms. McLow—” He cleared his throat and tried again. “Ms.—”

“McLowsky.” She lifted a shapely brow and tossed him a glance through her coke-bottle thick lenses, a blush on her cheeks. “Nina McLowsky.”

Did she just click her tongue in disapproval? Just his luck. She came with attitude.

“Of course.” He swiped a finger around his shirt collar, and his chest tightened. “Nina McLowsky.” Scrambling to regroup, he seized the Coffee-mate from the counter and filled a cup with coffee.

She looked like she had walked out of a 1950’s Norman Rockwell painting, an epitome of diplomacy and efficiency. He stroked his throat, and then shook his head, amazed. He was actually flirting with the idea of a merger …with her.
At least with her, there’d be no emotional tantrums. The thought had him breaking out in a sweat. He never let any woman get close enough to
get a glimpse beneath the surface, to know what made him tick. ‘Never trust
a woman’ was his motto.

A cab horn blared amidst the congested traffic on Madison Avenue and ripped through his thoughts. He flinched in annoyance.

He hadn’t felt this bridled since he was a boy, and, he had vowed never to feel like this again. But he was running out of options. He had to score a mega hit or he was going to cave. Fast. And that rankled his pride.

“Here you go.” He plopped the coffee cup on her desk, and a huff of air burst from his mouth, ruffling a wisp at her temple.

She squinted at the steaming brew, then up at him, her baby blues all innocence and perplexity. “Thank you.”

His gut flexed. He frowned and dismissed the unsettling feeling. “Careful, it’s hot.”

She peered at him above her thick lenses, a hint of a smile on her mouth, her fingers never missing a beat. Maybe if he focused on the dimple on her cheek, he could go through with the transaction.

“Take a moment, Ms. McLowsky.” The smell of caffeine gave him a boost, and latching onto his own mug, he shot her his killer smile.

“Well…uh…” he began, words sticking in his throat. “Drink up.”

“Yes, sir.” She picked up the steaming cup, blew on the liquid and took a sip, fixing her gaze on him over the rim.

Was that a glint of amusement in her eyes?

She blinked and it was gone. “Is that it, sir?” She set the cup on the desk.

“No.” He lifted his mug to his lips, took a gulp of the black brew and scorched his tongue. He swore, a muffled sound. She heard and raised that well-defined eyebrow again. He tautened his abs iron-hard. “There’s a new position in the company.” He stepped closer and hitching up his jean-clad leg, propped his hip on the corner of her desk. “You’re the best match.”

“What is it?”

“A merger of sorts.”

At thirty-three, Cade was not averse to a challenge, it was the coercion
tactic he abhorred. His lifelong nemesis that he booted from the boardroom
tossed him a curve to the tune of three million—problem was—the deal included a stipulation to muzzle…er…marry him off.

Cade was under no illusions his uncle’s offer was iced with ulterior
motives, but in no position to refuse, he had to take the bait. A pittance, but it’d swing him from the red into the black, and buy him some time. He’d expand his global holdings, complete the mega development in Cyprus, triple his profits and—his heart turned to stone—catch the hacker embezzling company funds.
The con was about to demolish Cade into a heap of rubble.

ALL WRAPPED UP IN YOU – A Christmas novella romance by Sun Chara.

The fairytale busted! Their marriage hangs in the balance, but on this wind battered Christmas Eve, a miracle is born…
When Ellie hooked up with world renowned neurosurgeon, Peter Medeci, aka ‘Prince Charming’, she thought her dreams had come true. But the demands of being the model wife to his career triggers a mutiny within her and she decides to ditch the ‘royal’ life until he sees her as more than his bedroom playmate.

“Ninety-nine cents.” Ellie stood outside the Burbank Media Mall showcasing a Christmas broach in her gloved hand to shoppers rushing by. She kept a smile plastered on her face, offsetting desperation rising in her throat, and wiggled her foot, adjusting the cardboard patch over the hole in her boot.

It had been three weeks since she ditched Prince Charming and the ‘castle’. Had she made the right decision?

She replaced the broach in the basket, and scooped up the coins on the bottom. Two sales on Christmas Eve, not a good sign.

The Santa Ana winds sliced through her thin coat, numbing her flesh; a gust swayed the Palm trees lining the boulevard. She pulled the pink cap lower over her ears, glad she’d also worn the matching scarf.

“A dollar ninety-nine.” Ellie counted the money in her palm and a
tremor shot through her. What could she buy with the pennies in her hand? She rifled through the pockets of her coat to ensure she hadn’t missed any coins. Nope, she hadn’t.

She leaned against the street lamppost and heaved a breath. Air
frosted her lips. Her heart thudded, and she fisted her fingers, the coins grating in her palm. “I can’t return to the castle…and to him.”

But she had to get home…a laugh bubbled inside her, and she bashed it down before it erupted from her in a hysterical sound that’d have people gaping at her. She dropped the coins in her purse, and with her head slightly bent against the wind; she made her way to the bus stop, but stalled in step when a Porsche pulled up along side of her.

“Get in,” the driver commanded, his voice sending shimmers of awareness through her. “You’ll freeze waiting for the bus.”

“Ellie, don’t be obstinate,” he said, a ripple of impatience in his voice. “I’ll give you a lift home.”

An eerie silence ensued in the lull in the wind, and the melody sailed to her from the car radio. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la la la…’ She nearly snorted at the lyrics. Jolly… Huh!

Peter Medeci, M.D. The highly sought after neurosurgeon, the man of her dreams. The man that had given her everything except the one thing she wanted most…and that’s why she skipped out on him. To get close to him again would be self-destructive, but even as she reasoned, her body hummed with yearning.

“I’ll make my own way.” But as soon as the words were out of her mouth, she cringed; she didn’t even have enough for bus fare for the ten-mile ride to her North Hollywood mouse-hole.

“You will not.” She heard the car door open, and paused in step. “Get in before you make a scene.”

New Release!!! Blessed Homecoming

Published July 13, 2012 by Lorraine Nelson - Author

I’m pleased to announce the release of Blessed Homecoming, my first inspirational romantic suspense through Breathless Press. It’s the first release in their new line, Blessings. When I started writing this book, I challenged myself to write something that was wholesome, faith-based, and therefore an entertaining ‘clean’ read, unmarred by cursing, sexual endeavors, drinking, or dancing. Needless to say, I am extremely pleased with the result. This is a book that mothers can share with their daughters and women can share with family and friends without worrying about content.

Join me now as I introduce you to Wendy Danforth and Jake Roberts, both of whom have emotional baggage and need the kind of healing that only comes through love and faith.

Their evening walk took them down to the creek, where they crossed to the middle of the footbridge and threw breadcrumbs to the procrastinating ducks. Didn’t they realize it was time to head south? Maybe it was a good omen that the weather would stay mild longer this year.

Wendy enjoyed the changing colors of the surrounding foliage brought about by the evening frost. The air was crisp and clear, and she inhaled deeply. There wasn’t even a scent of smog to make her hold her breath, as in the city.

The trek back seemed to take forever. Her back was hurting, and her feet were swollen so badly her shoes became tight, and she began limping. Her parents had walked ahead, leaving only her and Jake on the path. He noticed her struggle to walk, casually took her arm in his, and helped steady her until they got to a bench.

“Here, have a seat.”

He knelt at her feet, undid the laces on her sneakers, and took them off. He massaged her feet to get the circulation going again before replacing the sneakers and retying them more loosely. “Does that feel any better?”

A tingling zip worked its way from his fingertips to the bottom of her belly. It was a good feeling but one she’d have to be wary of, as she didn’t want to be dependent on this—or a man—in any way. The massage had rejuvenated her poor, tired feet. His touch had been gentle but firm as he’d worked his magic. “Much, thank you. I thought of tying them looser, but it’s so difficult to reach my feet these days, I figured it was easier to keep plodding along.”

“Discomfort of any kind can wear a person down. Next time, don’t wait until you’re limping and sore. Ask for help.”

“Next time, I’ll make sure to tie them looser before we head out.”

“Do you want to rest a while longer?”

“Yes, please.” She patted the seat beside her, and he sat, staring off into space, as if he didn’t dare look at her. “Where did you learn to perform a massage like that?”

For a minute, she didn’t think he would answer, but when he did, the words were totally unexpected.

“It was part of our training in medical school.”

“Really? What did you study?”

“I was a doctor.”

“Was?” She had visions of a malpractice suit or something ending his career.

“Am I being too nosy again?”

“Yes, but I know that won’t stop you, so ask your questions.” He smiled, taking the sting out of his words, and sat back on the bench, slightly turned toward her, his arm running along the back of the seat.

“What made you quit?” she asked softly.

“My world fell apart when I lost Emily and Timothy. She was in her last trimester…as you are…and died en route to the hospital. At first, the doctors thought they could save the baby. They were wrong. He was stillborn.”

“Jake, I’m so sorry.”

He acknowledged her words with a nod, then continued. “I was out of town at a convention when the call came in. Frantic to get a flight out, to get back to my family, I was almost ready to kill to get a seat on the next plane. Luckily, I didn’t have to. They put me on standby, and half an hour later, the flight took off with me on it. But it was too late. They were already gone.”

“I can understand your need to grieve for your family, but why give up what you’d studied so long to do?”

“A doctor takes an oath to preserve life, all life, but the violence that erupted inside me at the airport carried through to my family’s drunken murderer. All I could think of was revenge, an eye for an eye, a life for a life. So I resigned, and when the trial was over, I sold everything, packed up, and moved on. I couldn’t stay, couldn’t cope with the memories and the guilt, even after months of intense therapy.”

“What did you have to feel guilty about?”

“I should’ve been there. I should’ve been the one driving that car. It should’ve been me that died that day.”

“No, Jake. You have to believe that the Lord spared you for a reason. There’s a purpose in life you have yet to fulfill.”

He pulled away from her, and she missed the comfort of his arm behind her. His reaction was swift, his posture tense, and his hands balled into fists. “What kind of God allows an innocent woman and child to die like that while their murderer walks free?”

“Only God can answer that, Jake. But why did the courts allow the man his freedom?”

“I’m not sure. After the first day in court, I attacked him, and the judge banned me from proceedings. They sentenced him to one year in a rehabilitation program. He’s out now, and it’s taken everything I have in me not to hunt him down. That won’t bring Em and Timmy back to me.”

The anger was still there, simmering just below the surface, as evidenced by his words. She’d opened this can of worms with her nosy questions, but how could she make it right?

“Nothing can do that, but you’re the only one who can preserve their memory. Don’t allow it to dim from hatred and bitterness. It’ll destroy you in the end.” The baby gave a mighty kick, reminding Wendy of her presence, and she rubbed her belly. Jake had suffered a great loss, but his grief and healing wouldn’t be complete until he found a measure of peace.

“I don’t have your faith, Wendy. All I can do is try to get by from one day to the next.”

She placed her hand on his knee and spoke softly. “By helping the people you come into contact with.”

“It’s called earning a living.”

“No, I don’t think so,” she said as she searched his eyes for sincerity. “It’s more than that. I think you’ve got money tucked away. You work at carpentry jobs as a way to pass the time until you figure out what direction you want your life to take for the future.”

His expression closed, and he rose to his feet. “I don’t have a future here or anywhere else. It’s time to head back.”

Before she could clamber to her feet, her cell phone rang, and she motioned for Jake to wait as she fished it out of her pocket and answered. “Hello.”

Her query was met with silence. She tried again. A pause. “Hello! Who is this?”

Just as she was about to press the disconnect button in frustration, maniacal laughter erupted from the phone. She froze in terror, and it fell to the ground with a dull thud.

Jake was quick to snatch it back up and place it to his own ear.

“Who is this?” he demanded.
